Cold destinations to travel to this winter

Covid-19 Travel - December 13, 2021

Holidays don’t have to always be about soaking up the rays and tanning up. A cold wintery destination - maybe even with some snow - can provide the perfect getaway. That's why we have compiled a list of five amazing places to visit during the coming months for you winter lovers.

Berlin, Germany

Average Winter Temperature: 1°C

Regardless of your interest in history and politics, a visit to the Reichstag is arguably a must-do for any first-timers in Berlin. Booking in advance is essential during the peak season, but even in the winter, it would definitely be a smart decision to book at least a few weeks in advance. Also, it's worth noting that the sun sets around 16:00-17:00, so if you want to maximize your days, make sure to wake up and get out early and enjoy the light.

Another great thing to do is to stroll around some of the city’s Christmas markets, which is actually quite difficult to not do - Berlin has over 60 of them dotted around during the winter period. This is a great way to try some of the local food and drink and of course get into the Christmas spirit.

Reykjavík, Iceland

Average Winter Temperature: 0°C

Number one on the list of things to do in Reykjavík, and what should come as no surprise, is to see the Northern Lights. It's a popular activity, but it's popular for a reason. Whilst you can of course go exploring on your own, you should try to get a bus tour and let the locals guide you - they know where to go and find the best view.

For something completely different, visit the geothermal spa - also known as the Blue Lagoon. This is another one of Iceland’s most popular and visited attractions. And best of all, the bold, iconic blue water is heated to around 40°C - perfect for those cold, crisp days!

Copenhagen, Denmark

Average Winter Temperature: 2°C

The famous Tivoli Gardens offers what can only be described as one of the most picturesque, movie-like settings to get into the Christmas spirit. With bright, warmly lit carousels, ice-skating, rows of markets and Christmas decorations galore, Copenhagen will certainly get you in the festive spirit.

The best way to get around Copenhagen is undoubtedly on foot - regardless of the temperature. Copenhagen is all about taking detours down side-streets, stumbling upon spectacular buildings and dipping in and out of cafés, shops and museums along the way. If you do want a method of transportation that’s slightly quicker, why not get on a bike - they’re popular with the Danes.

Prague, Czech Republic

Average Winter Temperature: -1°C

Prague, like all of the other places on this list, is cold. January is often the coldest month, however temperatures throughout the majority of the winter season will be below freezing. But that doesn’t mean it is bad! What is certainly not bad, is the prices during this period - with flights and hotel prices noticeably cheaper during these colder months.

Prague boasts plenty of Christmas markets. However, what makes Prague extra special is that the markets stay open after New Years - a big plus! Old Town Square is a particularly favourite, with perhaps the most popular markets, iconic buildings and one very large Christmas tree to top it all off.

Alaska, United States

Average Winter Temperature: -14°C

If you want to guarantee snow under your feet, then Alaska is the place for you. But be prepared for cold - and I mean very cold - temperatures.

Similar to Iceland, Alaska also offers the Northern Lights. Of course seeing them is never a guarantee, but luckily most companies offering tours in Alaska provide insurance or a backup plan in the event of no lights. Usually, the best time to see the lights is in February.

Alaska has true natural beauty and as a result some of the world’s best National Parks - even more so in the winter. Denali National Park and Kenai Fjords National Park are two favourites and offer great opportunities for winter sports such as skiing, biking and snowshoeing.
